Welcome to ENG101
It is the start of a new year and a new life for most of you. Good luck with the semester and try to stay focussed on class. After all the weather is grey and miserable, but classes are warm and friendly!

Welcome to 102. You have chosen to study hard and pass 102 in the summer rather than lay on the beaches of the Meditteranean. I hope you decide to stick with your decision and don’t run for those beaches! Here’s a cartoon for you of our topic, human rights. Good luck and try to stick to your decision!
Here is a picture of what you could be doing instead- doesn’t look very interesting does it, or certainly not as interesting as discussing human rights in class!

According to many sources Oates’ was inspired to write the story ‘Where are you going, where have you been?’ after reading an article in Life magazine about the serial killer labelled as the Pied piper of Tucson. You can see more information about this man if you click on the above link. The story is also dedicated to Bob Dylan and many sources believe it is the song ‘It’s all over now baby blue’ that is the song in question. You can see the lyrics if you click on this link http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/bob+dylan/its+all+over+now+baby+blue_20021322.html
and the song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsx6tEXHi44
The question is about the ending of the story. Think about this question for class Monday 22nd did Connie imagine everything that happened as a dream, and if so what might Oates’ intention be here or did Arnold Friend have his way with Connie (whatever that might mean)? Think about this and be ready to support your answer with clear references. Look at the four interpretations of the story on the first link.
Well it is the start of a new semester. Welcome back and enjoy the spring as it unfolds!
